Charlie Smith Retires From Football

The club can announce that midfielder Charlie Smith has retired from football but will remain at McMullen Park as a First Team Coach.

The 28-year old has made the decision to hang up his boots on medical grounds after an impressive career that started at Luton Town. Smith also spent time at Hitchin Town, Barton Rovers, Hendon, Dunstable Town and Biggleswade Town before arriving at McMullen Park at the start of the 2023/24 season.

Having conducted the midfield throughout Bedford’s title winning campaign, Smith also picked up the goal of the season award for his audacious half-way line score against Biggleswade United.

Rob Sinclair spoke about Smith’s decision to retire:

“Charlie was a key part of the success we had on the pitch last season, he will certainly be missed in that regard as he has taken the tough decision to call it a day on the playing side.”

“That being said, we have had some great conversations over the last few months about him joining the coaching staff and this will hopefully mark the start of an exciting chapter in his career development.”

“His excellent on field career and knowledge will be a big impact on the touchline and everyone at the club is excited to have Charlie on board in this new capacity.”

You can hear from Smith as he talks through his decision to retire, his time on the pitch and looking ahead to his new role ahead of an exciting campaign in the video below.

The club would like to thank Charlie for his services on the pitch and wish him all the best with his new role.
